WHERE HAS 20 YEARS GONE?

“2O years. It sounds like such a long time but looking back, goes so quickly. In 20 years we’ve seen a lot of changes, but it’s surprising how much remains the same. I have recently celebrated 20 years as Chaplain at our local school and I hope that I have been able to be a positive presence for our school community over that time.

The world in many ways was very different. Twenty years ago was pre Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. Many people didn’t even have a mobile phone. Social networking was done face-to-face. While methods of communication have changed, people are still the same. We all experience good times and hard times. We still need each other and we need good relationships with each other. We need to love and be loved, to know and be known. Yet so often our relationships are marred with unresolved conflict, guilt, resentment and misunderstanding.

We experience the full range of emotions from optimistic and hopeful to despair, anxiety and frustration, from feeling positive to feeling overwhelmed, mostly dependent on the quality of our relationships. That’s not based on how many ‘Friends’ we have or who ‘Liked’ our posts, but on the depth of sharing, compassion, forgiveness, intimacy and trust that exists between people who care about each other, who support each other, who challenge us when necessary and who encourage us to grow.

I am very grateful for the privilege of serving our school and wider community, and for the relationships I have shared along the way. I have learned so much in 20 years and yet I know I still have a lot to learn.”

Principal Kylie Eggers says “Joy continues to be a person of supportive optimism with a joyful nature for the students, staff and community at Mannum Community College. It is rare to find a school employee who has the ability to work across all age groups in the school. All students respect Joy and she displays an equitable respect for all students and staff.”
