Suicide Grief and Intervention Skills

Course Description

The course consists of two modules:

Module 1: Understanding Suicide Grief (2.5 hours)

Module 2: Suicide Intervention Skills (2.5 hours)

Module 1: Understanding Suicide grief assumes some knowledge of loss and grief. This module is an introduction to suicide grief, what makes suicide unique and how to support people through suicide grief.

Module 2: Suicide intervention skills training teaches participants to identify and evaluate suicide risk and introduces the participant to the C.L.A.S.S.I.C. model of suicide intervention and safety planning.

Course Overview

Module 1: Understanding suicide explores the complexities surrounding suicide and suicide bereavement whilst giving the participants some useful knowledge and skills for supporting people impacted by suicide loss. Participants will learn about risk factors, statistics, the barriers people have to talking about suicide and explore some of the nuances that make suicide loss different to other losses. Participants will also learn about what happens when someone dies by suicide with the aim to be able to assist someone through these processes. Participants will learn how to support their community impacted by suicide and how to talk with young people about suicide.

Module 2: Suicide intervention skills training teaches participants about identifying and evaluating suicide risk and importantly, how to respond to suicide risk.  Participants are introduced to the C.L.A.S.S.I.C. model for suicide intervention and learn how to enter conversations about suicide with people at risk, with a higher level of confidence.  They will workshop the CLASSIC model and experientially learn how to have conversations about suicide.  Participants will also learn how to do a suicide safety plan with someone who is experiencing

Module 1

Topic 1: Understanding risk factors, statistics and why people suicide.
Topic 2: Understanding of What happens when someone suicides and what makes Suicide different to other loss including talking with children and their families about a suicide.
Topic 3: Understanding some of the barriers to talking about suicide and what PCW’s can do to support school communities after a suicide.

Module 2

Topic 1: Identifying evaluating and responding to suicide risk
Topic 2: Introduction to the C.L.A.S.S.I.C. suicide intervention model .
Topic 3: Safety planning.

Jacob Mangelsdorf

Hi I’m Jacob Mangelsdorf:  I’ve been a professional counsellor since 2008, I’m clinically registered with PACFA.  I’m experienced as a grief and trauma specialist counsellor as well as experienced in mental health, addictions, as well as experienced working with families, couples, children and young people.  Throughout my professional career I’ve developed various training and information sessions with a focus on being useful.  I’ve been with SMG since April 2023 in a training and education role.
