Supporting School Communities across South Australia SMG is the largest chaplaincy service provider in South Australia, with approximately 350 employees, providing pastoral and practical support to whole school communities through the unique role of a Pastoral Care Worker (formerly School Chaplain), SMG Life Matters Seminars, and other Wellbeing Services such as Kimochis training and resources for professional development, classroom use, parent workshops and more.

Position Summary

The Wellbeing Coach with Schools Ministry Group will provide a range of social and emotional coaching to school communities. They are responsible for implementing The Wellbeing Classroom or Wellbeing Playschool framework through site/class work and guidance by using social-emotional strategies and resources to improve overall wellbeing culture within an educational setting.


The duties associated with this position include the following:

  1. Work under the supervision of a Wellbeing Trainer to:
  • Coach children in developing social and emotional skills, using Kimochis® and other wellbeing resources
  • Guide educators on integrating these tools and approaches into daily practice.  
  • Assist the school in implementing a trauma informed approach        
  • Facilitate family learning events to parents and caregivers
  • Maintain regular communication with school, SMG and other stakeholders
  • Complete workplans and attend meetings as required
  • Collect statistics and data on social emotional development of children as required and report in a timely manner.   
  • Collect and share feedback and stories from the school community
  • Maintain a current knowledge of the needs of school communities and trauma informed practice


2. Safeguarding Children and Young People
Our organisation takes safeguarding children and young people seriously, and as an employee/volunteer of Schools Ministry Group you are required to meet the behaviour standards outlined in our Code of conduct. Which is provided during induction phase of employment.

As a part of your duties and responsibilities, you are also required to:
  • provide a welcoming and safe environment for children and young people 
  • promote the safety and wellbeing of children and young people to whom we provide services
  • ensure that your interactions with children and young people are positive and safe
  • provide adequate care and supervision of children and young people in your charge 
  • act as a positive role model for children and young people   
  • report any suspicions, concerns, allegations or disclosures of alleged abuse, by personnel as well as external individuals to management
  • report any breaches of policy by other personnel, however minor, to management
  • Act on and report any incidents of racism as outlined in our Code of Conduct
  • Support children and young people to express their culture and enjoy their cultural rights 
  • maintain valid Working with Children Check (or equivalent) documentation   
  • undergo periodic ‘national criminal history record’ checks 
  • report to management any criminal charges or convictions you receive during the course of your employment/volunteering that may indicate a possible risk to children and young people


Qualifications/Experience:

  • Appropriate qualifications in teaching, education, Youth Work, Ministry, or related field and/or demonstration of appropriate levels of experience, skills, and competency to complete the role efficiently
  • Experience using Kimochis® resources with children

Conditions of Employment

  • The successful applicant will be subject to a Working with Children Check (or equivalent) and Criminal History Records Check where applicable.
  • Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect – Education and Care full training before commencement (provided by SMG as needed)
  • Our organisation undertakes several screening processes to ensure the appropriate protection of children in its care. This includes reference checks, identity check, qualification checks and professional registration checks (where applicable).


In addition to the duties outlined above, you are also required to perform such other duties as may be directed by your supervisor or management provided these are within your competency or training.

Interstate and regional travel as required.
