Understanding Grief

Course Description

An introduction to grief theory and practice for carers and caring professionals. Participants will explore how grief impacts children, families and communities and learn how to facilitate healthy grieving.

Course Overview

This grief training focuses on understanding grief. The participant will be introduced to grief theory, grief in the context of child development, the impact of grief in families and communities. Participants will learn and discuss complicating factors for grief and explore through theory and practice, some strategies and tools that will strengthen how they support young people and families through their grief. Participants will also learn about making a referral, seeking support and importantly, how to take care of themselves while supporting someone in their grief.

Jacob Mangelsdorf

Hi I’m Jacob Mangelsdorf: I’ve been a professional counsellor since 2008, I’m clinically registered with PACFA. I’m experienced as a grief and trauma specialist counsellor as well as experienced in mental health, addictions, experienced working with families, couples, children and young people. Throughout my professional career I’ve developed various training and information sessions with a focus on being useful. I’ve been with SMG since April 2023 in a training and education role.
